Austrian Grand Prix Qualifying: Lewis Hamilton claims pole position in Austria

After a dramatic qualifying session at the Red Bull Ring, Lewis Hamilton is on pole position after beating Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg by over half a second with a 1:07.922 fastest lap.

After a huge team effort form the Mercedes garage, Rosberg was out onto the track during the first qualifying session after crashing out of practice 3 due to a suspected mechanical failure on his Mercedes car and will start the race from seventh place after a five- place penalty for a gearbox change triggered by the crash.

Despite finishing the session in second place, the grid penalty still remains for the German but he does however still lead the world championship by 24 points.

Toro Rosso driver Daniil Kvyat was eliminated after crashing at turn 9 during Q1 due to another rear suspension failure which reuslted in a red flag. It was bad news for teammate Carlos Sainz too after he suffered an engine blow-up during Q2, resulting in a yellow flag and a 15th place start position on the grid.

Great effort from Manor driver Pascal Wehrlein after he delivered a strong performance during Q2 for  as he’s lined up in 12th place for the race tomorrow.

 

 

Sebastian Vettel is also facing a five-place grid penalty for gearbox changes and once applied will drop down from fourth place to ninth place on the grid. The grid penalties also mean McLaren driver Jenson Button will start from 5th position to 3rd and Force India Nico Hulkenberg to second place, joining Hamilton on the front row of the grid.
