London has changed hands from the eccentric Tory Boris Johnson to the moderate Labour MP Sadiq Khan. He has made history by being the first London Mayor of the Islamic faith.
In a race frought with dirty tactics and subtle racism, Khan has emerged victorious with a majority evident by 7pm last night.
But what did Twitter have to say?
Labour supporters were thrilled:
‘@SadiqKhan win restored my faith in British politics substantially, here’s to a brighter & more inclusive future for Britain #LondonElects
— Sarah Naz (@SarahNazH) May 6, 2016
YES! My vote made a difference #yeswekhan Londoners have just shown that we don’t vote for the morally bankrupt #LondonElects

Others less so…
Oh London… To all you who voted Sadiq Khan for Mayor of London yesterday. #LondonElects #LondonMayor2016 pic.twitter.com/O3TWleTaBH

Quickly the topic of conversation turned to race:
Proud to live in a multicultural city that rejects racism. Welcome to our first Muslim mayor, @SadiqKhan #LondonElects
— Hilary Cross (@Hilary_Cross) May 6, 2016
All pork products banned within M25 – the new mayor’s first dictat! #LondonElects
— Christopher Dighton (@ChrisDighton) May 6, 2016
Which in turn prompted a response…
Interesting – much of the #LondonElects conversation is about race…as a multicultural city, surely we just voted for best man for the job?

But ultimately, the facts remain clear.
2,614,912 Londoners voted. The highest ever turnout for a Mayoral election #LondonVotes #LondonElects https://t.co/6AU0N8FMrJ
