Don’t worry ladies and gentleman, Litchfield Penitentiary and its prisoners (who we have grown to love and adore) are back, as the trailer for the third season of the popular American comedy-drama Orange is the New Black hits the web. Loosely based on the memoirs of the real-life Piper Kerman, the show describes her experiences in a women’s prison. The Netflix original series has taken the world by storm with its quirky characters, dramatic and emotional storylines and odd but hilarious sense of humour. After the success of the brilliant second season it’s been announced that, on 12th June, all episodes of the third season will be available on Netflix, so we can binge watch them at our lesiure.

So, what can we expect from the third season?

Out with the old…

Most importantly, Jason Biggs, who plays Larry the ex-fiance of Piper, is not returning to the show for the third season. The series regular has been a consistent part of the drama since the first episode, however Netflix has announced that he will not be coming back, allowing the show to focus more on other characters and plotlines. They haven’t ruled out the possibility of his return though. It is a shame that Larry will not feature as, in the last season, he started dating Piper’s best friend Polly in a shocking and dramatic twist. Although it would have been interesting to see what happens with Larry and Polly, I am sure we will find out somehow. Plus, we need a change of focus – there are plenty of other fascinating characters that deserve more screentime.

…in with the new

Like any prison, there are continually new inmates entering the world of Litchfield Penitentiary, meaning there’s a whole world of new cast members and characters for the third season to play with. Ruby Rose, a model and presenter in Australia who is fairly new to acting, is drawing most of the attention from the trailer, as her character catches Piper’s eye. A blurb in Elle magazine described her character as the “lust object” of warring couple Piper and Alex, who will probably be the focus of the drama. Alex Vause is set to feature heavily now that she is behind bars again. Piper and Alex’s relationship provides some of the most riveting drama the series has seen, so it will be intriguing to see their dynamics now they’re back in the same prison. Another great character who was largely absent from the last season but is (mercifully) back for the third is the evil Pennastucky, not exactly Piper’s biggest fan. I look forward to seeing what her return brings.

The trailer promises that Season Three will feature the same emotional drama that has driven the series so far, keeping you gripped to the edge of your seat. Ending on a funny clip that let us know that the brilliant Crazy Eyes has been venturing into the world of erotic alien involved (?) fiction, we already know that the third season will leave us laughing and laughing until our stomachs hurts. The OITNB creators as so not sorry that they’re bringing back the show for a third season – and you shouldn’t be sorry about being super excited to see it.
