Elusive and secretive solo artist Magique is an interesting character to interview. His music is bringing a fresh new wave of dream-psych-pop to the scene. Catch Magique's gentle vocals and unique sound on his debut single, 'Baby Blue', released last month.
First off, how would you sum up your music in 3 words?
Introvert pop tunes.
How did it all begin for you?
Out of boredom/frustration – I wasn’t one of these people who was raised on amazing music, I had to go and find it myself and when I did, I just became fixated with working out how these things worked together and why it sounded like it did.
Where is your music career at now?
Slowly building, slowly growing.
Tell us about ‘Baby Blue’.
It’s the first song I wrote that really set the tone for what Magique has turned into. I was just sad summer was over and worried about what I was meant to do next.
What can listeners expect from you?
More than they probably do.
Are there any particular musicians that inspire you?
Production wise, Justin Vernon is obviously great, I feel like that is an easy or obvious answer, though. I think I gravitate towards strange structures and sounds and people who self-produce – I love the new Temples single, James has an amazing approach to making music, and the results are always interesting. Mark Hollis of Talk Talk is the most under-rated songwriter in history too.
What music do you draw inspiration from?
Something that forces you to engage with it. The new D.D Dumbo record is amazing for that. I think I’ve listened about ten times and found something new every single time.
What are your musical guilty pleasures?
I never saw it as a guilty pleasure but I love 10cc and a lot of my friends find that really weird, and I’m a sucker for a massive pop tune.
Where do you see yourself five years from now?
I don’t give it much thought. Hopefully still creating, still growing, collaborating with people who I look up to.
What is your ultimate goal?
To keep the ability to make and create things by myself.
Finally, where can our readers keep up to date with you and check out your music?
They can keep up to date on my website.
