How to make your friend’s birthday special in 2020

Birthday party
Written by Nigel Simpkins

Let’s make no bones about it, this is not the best time to have a birthday. Whilst lockdown measures have been eased in recent weeks, the coronavirus is still a very real concern, so it’s understandable that you might not want to lavish your mates with a full-blown party this year. It’s simply not safe yet. But that doesn’t mean you can’t still make a fuss out of them and give them a birthday to remember.

So, here we’ll be looking at the ways we can go that extra mile to make our friends birthdays feel special this year.

Show the love

There are a thousand ways to send love, either digitally or otherwise. But in an age where sending a text, an email or a funny GIF is the standard, there is no replacement for a good old fashioned birthday card. If you really want to go that extra mile and make your friends birthday special, you could also think about getting them some unique banners or even bunting from Card Factory to really make them feel special. Focus on finding the perfect accessories for your friend that sums up your unique relationship and what makes your friendship truly like no other.

The gift of yum

Food is the easiest way to a  person’s heart and chances are, you know exactly what it is that makes your mate’s mouth water. Maybe they are really into their chilli sauces? Or perhaps they have a notorious sweet tooth? Whatever the vice, there is sure to be an online service available to deliver it right to their doorstep, particularly during lockdown, as more local, artisanal businesses have been forced to conduct their business online.

Surprise surprise

A surprise party is only truly a surprise when nobody is expecting it, and who would honestly expect a surprise right now when we’re still being encouraged to remain at home as much as possible. You’re going to have to be creative here. Maybe send a shout out to a local radio station that you know they listen to, turn up on their doorstep with a load of banners and bunting or send them a video chat out fo the blue with all of your friends ready to greet them on the other side.

Create something original for them

Yes, we know it might be a little cheesy, but if you are a musician then why not write a birthday song for them? Or if you’re an artist, paint them something from scratch or sculpt something that they might appreciate. Even if you’re not particularly creative, the thought and effort that goes into the gift of an original, one-of-a-kind experience or product are really hard to beat!
