The PS4 launch saw gaming giant Sony break more records for pre-orders.

Sony’s console giant broke the record for Amazon pre-orders, and GAME confirmed that they received four times as many PS4 pre-orders than previous consoles. Avid gamers have been queuing in London since Tuesday to get their hands on the console before others. Retailers are expecting to sell out well before the festive period even begins.

Such record sales cannot come without a certain level of extravagance and as such Sony decided to give the PS4 the unmasking it deserves with Covent Garden gamers  treated to an all out Playstation-a-thon with a PS4 Live Lounge, as well as competitions and various public appearances from celebrities.

In the run up to the event the Sony marketing team have taken no time off with the console’s iconic X, Circle, Triangle, and Square being projected onto the side of the OXO Tower in London.

The main bulk of the live stream was dedicated to displaying the technical prowess of the PS4 compared to it’s predecessors. Displaying the changes in graphics and style from the PS1 to PS3. We all saw Sony’s hosts talking to the crowd around Covent Garden keeping their gaming masses excited and building us up to the main unveiling. A key announcement for privacy aware users would be that Sony’s UK managing director, Fergal Gara described the camera as not a must-have.

The more die hard gamers will be excited to know that the focus on the indie game scene continues with Sony hoping that they will be able to make the Playstation the spiritual home of the indie gamer. We’ll also see a smooth transition between handheld and console gaming with the Vita and PS4 working hand-in-hand.

The PS4 controller is due to be a hit with users as well. Following a facelift the Dualshock 4 controller still features the classic Playstation look but has a new improved touch pad allowing for more user interactivity and removing the need for additional controllers such as the PS3’s Playstation move wand.

The PS4, the cutting edge of gaming technology will set users back roughly £350, whilst new PS4 titles are to be priced around £50. The new technology however will mean that the console’s predecessor the PS3 will be seeing a price drop, a good sight for the frugal student pocket. A PS3 bundle can now cost less than £200.

All in all it’s been a definite success for Sony. Their UK launch went well by smashing records and their Italian launch hit Twitter quickly when it was compared to a Disney style lights display.
