Album Review: Siren by Lili La Scala

The problem with these multitalented cabaret artists is that I can never find any faults in their performances.

This is how I feel when it comes to diva Lili La Scala. The cabaret hostess and singer of vintage songs enchants us with her new album Siren. Enticing you in with her angelic voice, La Scala uses her finesse as a performance artist to add a touch of elegance and class to Siren.

Mesmerising voice

You’ve heard of Ariel the little mermaid with the beautiful voice of the ocean? Forget her. Lili La Scala has such a mesmeric voice, the way she’s able to command the attention of the listener with the first song is something not many artists can do.

I have a particular likening to ‘Song to the Siren.’ It takes me to a coastal village as I picture myself walking along the coast, watching the waves crash against the rocks, but I don’t mind the violent sounds they make as the song is so relaxing. ‘Song to the Siren’ is truly romantic; a story of love, loss, heartbreak and heartache – Lili La Scala knows how to bring every emotion to just one magnificent song.

The story of the sea

Siren isn’t just an album, it’s a story about the journey of a ship, about the shifting of time and the songs of the sea. When you listen you’re hypnotised straight away, no matter how much you may wish to stop listening, you can’t.

As a girl from the North East, which of course has a shipyard/sailing heritage, I find that I can relate to these songs.

I can especially relate to the ‘Mingulay Boat Song’, which I believe is originally an old fisherman’s song from the highlands. It reminds me of the spirit and passion that us Geordies have, that camaraderie of the community looking after each other. Picturing everybody sitting in a warm pub, sitting around tables drinking, feeling merry and going home to their wives to be treated to a freshly-baked steak pie. It just has that oomph about it, with pipes and jovial muisc. It’s one of the best tracks on the album.

This album sends shivers down my spine. I have been completely swept away by Lili La Scala.
