Even though Wimbledon experienced the highest temperatures that it has ever seen before, there was still plenty of exciting tennis to be played. At 32C, many big names struggled to keep their cool.
Novak Djokovic made quick work of his second round match as he beat Jarkko Nieminen in straight sets (6-4, 6-2, 6-3). The second round match was also a farewell to Nieminin, as he is set to retire at the tender age of 33. Djokovic will now progress to the third round where the Austrailan 27th seed Bernard Tomic awaits.

Mixed results for British tennis
It was not good news for English number 6 Liam Broady as he was beaten in straight sets by David Goffin. After saving three set points in the first set hopes were high that Broady would be able fight back like he did on the first day. The tie break soon disheartened Broady’s fans. Goffin then made quick work of the match winning 7-6, 6-1, 6-1. Goffin, the 16th seed, will now progress to the third round.
There was some good news for British tennis fans though as Heather Watson made her way into the third round. This is only the second time in her career that Watson has progressed this far in Wimbledon. The 23 year old who is the only British woman left in the main draw, had to deal with soaring temperatures as she played Daniela Hantuchov. Watson won in straight sets (6-4, 6-2) and could face world number 1 Serena Williams in the next round.

More wins and an injury
Elsewhere, Grigor Dimitrov was on court playing Steve Johnson. Dimitrov, who made it to last year’s semi-finals after beating Andy Murray in the quarter finals, managed to win his second round game today in straight sets (7-6 6-2 7-6).
There was sad news though for the 5th seed Kei Nishikori, who was set to play Santiago Giraldo on centre court but instead withdrew from the competition due to a calf injury. Giraldo was subsequently awarded a walkover.
The second round will continue tomorrow, hopefully with lower temperatures.
