Will search engine blocking reduce paedophilia?

Recent changes in search engines have been implemented in order to make accessing child pornography or paedophilia behaviour and links to be supposedly less easy to access.

Recent changes in search engines have been implemented in order to make accessing child pornography or paedophilia behaviour and links to be supposedly less easy to access.

Google and Microsoft, who are in control of search engine Bing, are working together with the UK National Crime Agency and the Internet Watch Foundation to prevent images, abuse and links to these horrific items being so easily found.

Will the block really help?

Over 100,000 words and phrases have been blocked from being searched upon through these engines. The new implementation that if some of these phrases are searched for that the user will be directed to places of help with work through charity and be made aware of how illegal these items are.

Unfortunately most paedophiles need more help mentally than physically, these items to be searched for are being seeker from a very disturbed mind and despite the extreme anger than many can feel towards these cases these sick people haven’t the same limitations in their mind of what is acceptable or not.

The implementing of blocking the access is always a step in the right direction, never has paedophilia been more dominant than the past five years, and with more celebrity or high profile members of the public becoming the culprits the media is reporting more and more.  The idea is fully fledging, this stops the easy access and for anyone who thinks of a quick Google search will be quickly stopped in his or her passes.

Work still to be done

However, there is room to wonder, despite how sickening paedophilia is, a lot of cases in which terabytes of data are found, these individuals or even groups are not necessarily dumb people. The ability to store so much data in a matter of time without being caught quickly shows a awful reality, not only is it the most evil of thoughts that children are exploited in such ways in such huge quantities but these individuals will continue to escape the system and find material.

There needs to be more work into tracking, if these key words are ever processed, the police should be made aware and see if these become regular or relevant searches, if so these should be investigated. The Internet is ever expanding, and is a hard database to moderate when putting restrictions in place; by blocking and higher punishments and quicker implantation of restriction would only be a start.

So will it work? In short term, yes, the blocks and beginning stages of restrictions will be the perfect building blocks into this horrendous and ever increasing crime. In the long term this is not the only solution, we know cases like Jimmy Saville and Ian Watkins have only now come to light and what will the next few years’ hold?

It doesn’t bare thinking of and it’s only once the government and these big companies and service providers work together and perfect the long term solution with tougher penalties on these crimes that the offences will be put to a stop.

What do you think? Are these efforts enough to reduce paedophilia? Have your say in the comments section below.
