Now you can call the MTV Video Music Awards a lot of things, but tame certainly isn’t one of them. In a celebration of the best music videos of the year, you can be sure to expect a whole lot of celebrity feuds, social empowerment, staggering outfits, oh… and some music.
This years show, which took place on Sunday night at the Los Angeles Microsoft Theater, certainly wasn’t short of any of those things. Hosted by pop royalty and Instagram sensation Miley Cyrus and featuring performances from the likes of Nicki Minaj, Taylor Swift, Demi Lovato, Pharrell Williams and Macklemore to name a few; the stars were out in full force.
As host of the VMAs you kind of get a free pass to be as crazy as you like and Miley certainly didn’t disappoint. With a staggering eleven outfit changes during the night, all were arguably even more provocative then that latex nude number we saw her twerking in during that legendary performance with Robin Thicke back in 2013. She wasn’t alone with her fashion forward style and where your outfit shines, the way you accessorize with hair and makeup needs to be just as good. Here are my favourite beauty looks from the evening…
Miley Cyrus
With so many outfit changes its hard to know where to begin with all that colour, glitter and nakedness… The major staple to each and every one of her outfits included a slick back, dreadlocked ponytail. The long blonde dreads were secured with a number of different extravagant bejeweled fastenings, with stones dripping through the faux hair all the way to her bum. If that wasn’t enough, her electric blue eyeliner was a staple that is sure to spread as quickly as her 2013 pigtail buns. Teaming that with a bright red lipstick, in true Miley style, she ignored the unspoken rule that you can’t glam up both your eyes and your lips at the same time.
Britney Spears
There’s been a major void in the VMAs for the past few years, but at long last Britney is back! She presented the first award of the evening for Best Male Video to Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars for Uptown Funk. Looking amazing in a barely-there sequin dress from Labourjoisie’s Limited Edition 2015 collection, which took us right back to her Toxic video, she also opted for a high pony similar to Miley’s, minus the dreads. The mum of two kept it youthful with a touch of turquoise to purple dip-dye and tie around braid. Team that with a classic Britney bold eye, nude lip combo and its like shes never been away.
Nicki Minaj
It was a busy night for Nicki, with her stifling rumours of a feud between her and Taylor Swift by opening the show with her in a massive red headpiece, winning Best Hip-Hop Video for Anaconda and then doing a full 360 and going back into feud mode, by calling out Miley Cyrus during her acceptance speech. Drama aside and headpiece down, her red carpet look was flawless, with her staple fringe and sleek hair shaping the best eyeliner of the night. Keeping it top heavy, along with a nude lip and glowing cheeks, she looked like an Egyptian empress.
Taylor Swift
Winning not one, not two, but three of her four nominations, as well as performing and presenting Kanye West with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award; Taylor was on the stage almost as much as Miley. A far cry from her usual red lips and loose waves, she opted for the ultimate cat eye to go alongside her metallic houndstooth-print co-ordinate set design by Ashish. The heavy black liner had both inner and outer corner wings to make it even more alluring. Rose pink nude lips created the perfect counterbalance to her bold eyes and teamed with a simple sleek low ponytail, she was still very much her usual classy self.
Vanessa Hudgens
The bohemian babe brought festival chic to the red carpet, with long loose curls to shape her low-cut Naeem Khan rose pink gown. Her crown braid screamed Coachella style and effortlessly made the laid back look that extra bit glamorous. It even included dainty jewels tucked in to accessorize with three statement necklaces. Easy to achieve smoky eyes and matching her dress to her lips made this look a winner.
Kylie Jenner
The youngest of the Jenner/Kardashian gang outshone her sisters in a stunning Balmain mini dress. Her hair, which is ever-changing and was turquoise only two days before, was back to her natural colour, with a fringed wig to frame chocolate smoky eyes. Nude lips were definitely out in force, with Kylie opting for a slighter darker rose nude than those we’ve seen already. You can say a lot about this eighteen year old, but her makeup is always on point!
