Sheffield, the greatest student city in the country

‘Oh, you go to uni in Sheffield, that’s a great night out,’ is the main response I get when showing my student card for student discounts in any store throughout the country.

‘Oh, you go to uni in Sheffield, that’s a great night out,’ is the main response I get when showing my student card for student discounts in any store throughout the country.

But it isn’t just the nightlife that makes Sheffield the ultimate destination for students, for the most part the entire city is geared towards students. But, since nightlife is such a major part of your life as a student, let’s start with that.

Going Out

On any given night of the week you have at least two great options for somewhere to go. This is great in your first year but a bit depressing in your second and third years because there’s just more things to miss out on when you’ve got loads of work to do.

Sheffield University’s student’s union (voted Britain’s best in the latest National Student Survey) has nights out Monday through Saturday, each a different theme. Pop Tarts on Saturday nights is a personal favourite, playing the best in cheesy pop songs all night.

Leadmill is great for live bands, Plug plays the latest hits and has a drum and bass night, and the infamous Corporation is beyond words, something you can only understand if you’ve been there (particularly on a Wednesday for the ‘Skool Disco’).

Thursday night Carver Street is the best option, offering a wristband getting you into all five clubs on the street for only a fiver.

Shopping

Besides the town centre, only a short tram ride away is Meadowhall – a massive shopping centre that will suit anyone’s shopping needs.

They have student lock-ins throughout the year that are not to be missed especially after you’ve spent all your money going out every night.

Sheffield also has at least four vintage shops perfect for finding fancy dress outfits and just cool, cheaper clothing than the high street.

The Peak District

When it isn’t raining a great way to get the city out of your hair for a few hours is by going to the Peak district. While a nature walk probably isn’t everyone’s idea of fun it is something that should be done at least once. On a nice day with friends and some food it is always enjoyable.

Certain societies at the university offer trips into the Peak district so that’s always something to look out for.

Eating out

Most students may only do this on special occasions, but loads of restaurants offer student discounts and certain deals on certain days.

Sheffield city centre has a restaurant for every type of food you could want, from Indian to Chinese to Italian and all the fast food favourites: Nando’s, McDonalds, and KFC.

For a more formal meal Ecclesall Road is full of nice restaurants including, Nonna’s, La Tasca and Pizza Express.
Websites like, www.studentbeans.com are a great way to get discounts on eating out and just about anything else there is.

Sheffield – a student’s city

While Sheffield is a big city, walking around as a student you never feel you’re lost or alone. There is always something to do and always other students around and everyone seems to make the most out of what the city has to offer.
