Pet peeves of the university library

With the exam period fast approaching, the university library has become many student’s place of refuge during this stressful time. But, when you put a large amount of stressed students in one place, there can be repercussions. Here’s a list of some of the most common pet peeves we all experience during this time, many of which we commit ourselves!

Using laptops in front of a library computer

This one’s a biggie. When there are limited computer spaces in the bustling library, it’s every man for himself. So, when you’ve done 3 library laps and the only free computer is taken by someone using their own laptop in front of it, it’s infuriating to say the least. If you know you’re a culprit, give someone else a chance, and sit at a table!

Being told off by university staff

There’s nothing more embarrassing than when you spot the librarian making a bee line for you and you’re surrounded by fellow students. Mostly, they’re just doing their job and trying to keep the library a studious place for all, but there’s a small part of all of us that knows they are enjoying the power. Even though you’ve left school and are writing academic essays to improve your employability skills doesn’t put you out of their war path. For those who have a hot drink in the silent area: beware.

Noise in the silent area

If you’re brave enough to venture into the silent area, you’re in it for the long haul. Often the students here are pulling an all-nighter, piecing together the finishing touches of their dissertation, or keeping their revision game strong. Unless you’re willing to endure the looks and loud tuts, you should refrain from doing the following to keep your peers happy; playing music loudly through headphones, texting without your phone on silent, and chatting above whisper level to your neighbour. And never forget to turn your music off before removing your headphones from your laptop!

Book Fines

Every student’s annoyance, the mounting fines you face when someone reserves the book you have. When you’ve got a dissertation to study for, you really can’t be letting your best sources go – so be careful you don’t end up owing the library a small fortune at the end of the year!

Taking your off shoes

As far as I am concerned, this is always unacceptable.
