Many people look at me like I have rabies when I tell them I don’t wash my hair with shampoo, what I should tell them is that I am not pouring chemicals all over my hair. Because essentially this is what you do when you wash your hair with conventional shampoos. When you wash your hair, it is being affected by the chemicals and tries to repair its self with natural greases… which is why you end up washing your hair every day or two
I wash my hair with natural shampoo bars (and condition with diluted vinegar) which contain no man-made chemicals at all, meaning they bring hair back to natural health. Don’t get me wrong it took time to get to naturally healthy hair, but now I wash my hair every four days. Saving time and money!
I started using shampoo bars after watching a video on YouTube which told all the benefits of using natural shampoo and thought it sounded worth a try. After the first wash, I was ready to give up… my hair was dry and my scalp felt disgusting. But I am so glad I persevered. It takes time for your hair to get used to not fighting chemicals and even three months in there were times when my hair felt disgusting. Now, I love using shampoo bars and I would never be able to go back to washing my hair “normally”. I used to wash my hair every day and I cannot imagine doing that now.
The really great thing about using shampoo bars is that they can last for months and are the same price as one bottle of shampoo and conditioner.
This really is not for everyone, some people have to have perfect hair every day and they would get frustrated with the process involved but if you are willing to be patient and have a hat collection you wish to show off, this may be for you.
Tips for using natural shampoo:
- Look at the ingredients- different plants and herbs have different properties to suit hair types
- Use Talcum powder- for days when your hair is greasy, it acts as an absorbent and makes your hair look fresh. Just rub small amounts into the scalp
- Don’t give up- it will take time and some getting used to but it really is worth it
- Try different methods and measurements- I have found that if I use more vinegar or leave the shampoo on too long my hair can be totally different. Work out what is right for you
