What’s on my Shelf: Travel Editor Sophia Bi

A book lover’s bookshelf can be full of some great books, and some that might become your next favourite read – and our new books column, ‘What’s On My Shelf’, allows a glimpse into the bookshelves of our editors here at Kettle. This week, have a look at what can be found on travel editor Sophia Bi’s bookshelf.

My passion for reading began at an early age when my dad bribed me into reading the very first Harry Potter book – and in reward, he would take me to the cinemas to watch the film once I had finished, and boy did it work. Reading sets me free from boredom and instead I’m able to use my time wisely and productively.

My top five favourite books are:

Harry Potter series – J.K. Rowling brought magic to my life at an early age and since then I’ve become a major Potterhead. I grew up watching and reading the series and the characters have grown up with me, these will never be taken down from my bookshelf!

Game of Thrones series – I’ve become hooked since I watched the TV series and the books do not disappoint. I’m waiting impatiently for George R. R. Martin to release the next sixth novel of the series The Winds of Winter.

How to Talk with Practically Anybody About Practically Anything – This book is written by American Broadcast Journalist Barbara Walters. I fell in love with this book simply because as a journalist I found her books very useful in interviewing people on screen and off. As a person who suffers from anxiety, it really helped me engage more in conversing with all sorts of people throughout university.

The Magic –  Walking into Waterstones looking for a new book to get my hands on, one of my friends introduced New York Times bestselling author Rhonda Byrne to me. The Magic is one of the greatest books she’s written, it focuses on how gratitude plays a major role in the law of attraction and how to start each day on a positive note.

The Lord of the Rings series – Named as Britain’s best-loved novel, J.R.R. Tolkien gave readers a certain imagination and captivated us by places like Rivendell and introduced us to interesting character perceptions.

What I’m currently reading:

Wild: A Journey from Lost to Found – I’m currently reading this book and it’s certainly one of my favourite books I’ve ever read, simply because it’s brilliantly written. This book, written by author Cheryl Strayed, is a heartfelt memoir of her 1,100 mile solo hike on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State. It conveys a lot of emotions.
