Frivolity

I never knew that! with Kettle Beauty Editor, Renate O’Connor

At Kettle Mag the editors remain hidden away in Kettle towers occupying themselves with ideas, proofing, tweeting and keeping their ears tuned to the latest news. But what do we know about these busy creatures? Here at frivolity over the coming weeks we intend to find out…and this week we put a mirror up to Beauty Editor Renate O’Connor.

My parents don’t know this about me but…

When I was about 7 I threw my brother’s Spiderman action figure in the bin after he annoyed me about something (probably not even that big of a deal) and then joined the whole family in searching the house for it when he was crying about losing it… soz bro.

What’s your favourite word that rhymes with Kettle?

Erm… Petal?

How long after you wake up do you check your phone?

Almost immediately. Instagram first!

Stranded on a desert island you wouldn’t be without…

Would I sound like an absolute loser if I said my boyfriend…? Simply because he’d make me laugh the whole time. I could probably convince him to do all the hard work I’d imagine goes along with being stranded on a desert island too.

What’s the most revolting food you’ve ever eaten?

A lychee… just not ok.

If any, which piece of make-up would you hate to be seen without?

Eyebrow pencil. My hair is so fair that without drawing in my eyebrows it literally looks like I have none. I’ll never forget one particularly hungover day in halls in my first year at uni when I just didn’t bother and as soon as one of the guys in the flat saw me, he screamed ‘OMG who shaved your eyebrows!?’ Devastating.

What’s the oldest product in your make-up bag?

I have a questionably old light-pink lipstick in there that I don’t think I’ve ever used, hence why I can’t bring myself to throw it away. It’s so old I can’t even tell what brand it is anymore!

If you couldn’t edit the Beauty section for Kettle, which section would you choose?

The most obvious choice for me would be either the Fashion or Women’s section but I’d also love to give Culture a go. I think you could come up with a really interesting range of articles there. It’s currently a vacant position,so get applying people!

Wine or beer?

Wine all day, every day.

Cat or dog?

This is a seriously tough one. I see cats in the street and want to pop them in my bag and take them home with me, but I also spend at least 10 minutes every day watching videos of people being given puppies for Christmas… Can I just have both? (Yes, you can have both – plus this little swan too! You big softy 🙂 ED)

Football or rugby?

Football.

iphone or Android?

iPhone.

Apart from writing, what other creative talents do you have?

I’ve always been quite artistic. My sister Rachael puts me to shame though, she’s amazing!

If you were a punctuation mark, what would you be?

I love commas. I find it so hard to write in short sentences. That probably says something about me, I’ll let you decide what…

What’s your most unappealing habit?

I like to be sassy, aka can be a major bitch. I can’t help it. I try and be nice to everyone but it just doesn’t work out for me.

What would you like to be remembered for?

I really want to make a difference. Sounds a bit cliché and I’m not sure what that’ll really entail yet, but I want to change the world for the better. That would be something I’d definitely be proud to be remembered for.

Have you ever volunteered for anything?

I’ve worked as a waitress at quite a few charity events, which is always great fun. I’d love to do some work with homeless charities as I hate just walking past someone sleeping on the streets. It makes you feel so helpless, I can’t even imagine how they feel. It’s definitely going to be a new year’s resolution for me.

Who so far, family or otherwise, has influenced you in your life?

I have one BIG family. Being the oldest of nine kids, I have four sisters and four brothers – yes omg that’s a lot, yes we all have the same mum/dad, yes my mum and dad both work, yes my mum does a lot washing, yes the food shop bill is always a lot, no I don’t want loads of kids… Can you tell I always get asked the same questions?

With that many characters there’s plenty of influences in my life. My parents in particular are so ridiculously supportive. They always say they’ll be proud of me no matter what I do as long as I’m happy and they really mean that. With that kind of backing I can always find the positives in any situation.

Which emoji do you use most frequently?

The laughing one is always my number 1 but Santa is creeping on in there at number 2 recently.

What was the last song you listened to on your ipod/phone?

Justin Bieber – ‘Sorry’. I’m one of those new-born Beliebers… and I fancy him. There I said it.I can’t deny it any longer.

What’s your most overused word or expression?

Oh my god.

What keeps you awake at night?

Moths! Why do they exist!? Why do they always fly at my head?!
