Everyone’s jumping into jumpsuits, but I’m just baffled.

The jumpsuit; the stylised adult baby gro? The easy option for an outfit? The lazy way of pairing a top with trousers because it’s all sewn into one anyway?

The jumpsuit; the stylised adult baby gro? The easy option for an outfit? The lazy way of pairing a top with trousers because it’s all sewn into one anyway? I can’t quite get my head around the current trend, I am torn between whether it’s a really weird way of dressing or if it’s actually an incredible garment that I must grasp wearing seeing as I’m a fashion writer.

I’m looking at the catwalk now and the jumpsuit is beyond everywhere, it’s almost as strong as this season’s pencil skirt. In fact, I’d go as far to say that it’s bigger, especially as the all-in-one made quite a significant appearance over the summer alongside its sister, the playsuit.

Chanel won the competition outright for the darkest and most daring of the jumpsuit- not only significantly low cut, it sported a lace overlay and rolled up trouser legs. Balmain took a slightly different approach, again with a terrifyingly low v-neck but this time oversized hairy shoulder pads.

On the other hand Michael Kors created an elegant silk onesie, perfectly regal in celebration of his 30th year in the industry. There were even velvet versions from Charles Anastase (something I can safely say I will be staying well away from due to my fear of velvet) and expose bra-let designs from Sonia Rykiel. These were beautiful. Also a little raunchy. On the other hand Paul & Joe’s all in ones terrified me, I would feel like an Abba remake walking into town wearing such a design, although no doubt about it their choice of print was admired.

I’m all game for giving a new trend a go; in the wise words of Eleanor Roosevelt ‘you must do the thing you think you cannot do’. So I have purchased a jumpsuit and I have worn it once. It’s black (you can liken me to Chanel’s Abbey Lee Kershaw if you fancy), it’s nipped at the waist (although not in the most flattering of ways – that’s one thing I’m not warming to about the jumpsuit trend) and it goes right to the ankle, ideal for a situation when I’m running late and do not have the time to tan up my white-as-white legs. Or if I’m honest, shave them.

So I guess it has its pro’s. Did I mention it was strapless? Well, my collarbones for sure are enjoying their moment of fame.

But the jumpsuit, ladies and gentlemen, is something that still to this day…. baffles me.
